The Cooktown Orchid is one of Australia's nine magnificent floral emblems (QLD).

This species was first collected on a small island north east of Cape York and sent to London, where it was described and named in 1852 by John Lindley, a colleague of Sir Joseph Banks.

In 1959 this orchid was proclaimed the floral emblem of Queensland.
